ABOUT US
Friends of Horses Rescue & Adoption
(FOHRAA) is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation dedicated to horse rescue, adoption
and education based in metropolitan Denver, Colorado. With
over 100
horses currently being cared for, FOHRAA is not a "typical" rescue.
A majority of our horses came from loving homes that were no longer able to care
for them. They're GREAT horses! We place many foals and
horses in adoptive, loving homes including PMU foals and retired thoroughbred
racers. We also work closely with the Colorado Bureau of Land Management's
wild mustang population and Colorado State University's equestrian
program, often finding good homes for retired program horses.
Our main focus is education on responsible breeding practices, as there
are far too many good horses being neglected who could find loving homes if
considered first.
The Friends of Horses Rescue and Adoption was
started by Bill Stiffler after he received numerous telephone calls over the
years from
families looking for good homes for their horses. After funding the operation
himself in the past, he started the non-profit group Friends of Horses Rescue
and Adoption Foundation (FOHRAA) in 2002. FOHRAA rescues, rehabilitates and places
into adoptive homes horses including PMU foals, retired racehorses, sound
pleasure horses, companion horses and seniors. Most are grade type, although
some are registered purebreds. Since formalizing FOHRAA, much of the rescue's
work has focused on saving foals, many from PMU farms and killer auctions,
saving them from a brutal death at slaughterhouses where their meat is exported
to Europe and Japan for human consumption.
Over the past decade a number of very good horses have met
their fate by way of the slaughterhouse. FOHRAA gives an option to those
individuals who might otherwise send their horses to killer markets. It also
helps rescue racehorses and other horses at risk or that have been neglected. In
the last year, FOHRAA has placed hundreds of horses into adoptive homes. Adoption
fees vary from $500 to $2,500. On occasion we come across horses that have more
value and will be adopted at their value. Proceeds from the adoptions help fund
the tremendous costs FOHRAA incurs to feed, vaccinate, house, vet and find homes
for such a large number of horses.
